EGBCHotham Biathlon launched the Australian 2025/26 snow season with an on snow camp at Hotham. With significant and unbelievably big snow falls coming across the King's Birthday weekend camp participants were able to ski each day and work on getting early season fitness and mid altitude acclimatisation. The camp coincided with EGBC officially launching it’s Biathlon for All Abilities Project.
Due to the wild and heavy snow falls, the camp started with an introduction to lead coach Damon Morton’s new high performance strength program. Courtesy of the Hotham Race Club athletes used the Hotham Race Club gym to undertake stability and balance exercises and then progress to specific strength exercises from Damon's program.
The snow was good for classic skiing through the village on Saturday afternoon and participants really enjoyed brushing off the cobwebs from their skis.
On Sunday morning participants accessed grooming on the Big D before the lifts opened and then progressed to the first tracks up the famed Poo Farm Hill and through the Hotham Heights Village courtesy of GOD. Yes, our own Greg O’donohue. It is great to see Greg back on the groomer again this year as well as Neil Burbridge. Thank you both for all your work, we don't know where Hotham would be without you.
In the afternoon our athletes went out classic skiing again and this time were able to ski right down to skiers crossing on really good snow and groomed tracks. Again GOD was out grooming down to Whisky Flat and groomed around Biathlon around dusk to provide excellent skiing for Monday. Athletes ran into Bev Lawerence who is still working for Hotham as the X C ski patroller.
On Monday more snow came, making the early season total snow at Hotham to fall over the three days over 50cm; really setting up the season. Participants braved a snow storm to do the first shooting and skiing session in of the snow season; well done!. It is good to train in all conditions to know how to handle it as you can guarantee conditions will never be perfect in Australia; it also builds character.
See below picture of Thea Harvey shooting at Hotham with the snow bombing down during the opening of the ski season for 2025. How unbelievable?
Numbers permitting, EGBC will be running on snow coaching at Hotham each weekend leading into the ski season.
